Race Report:

I figured what the hell. I even picked up a strap at the EXPO when I picked up my packet, which I rode to on my Bike and will most likely do again next year as it was a great ride down to crystal city.

We got up around 5 to have breakfast and make it to the metro early enough so we wouldn’t be rushed. We made it to the East Falls Metro and were jogging to board the train in the front car since we saw seats and just as I was getting on I heard a clunk. I looked down in horror as my cell phone flew down from my pocket and down to the tracks. There was no way I could get it so I just shrugged it off and hopped aboard.

We got to the race and I headed straight to the Porto-Potty lines and Julie took our stuff to the baggage check. I realized that I had left my new strap in the bag so after the Jiffy john stop I headed over to retrieve my bag and they couldn’t find it. Normally I would be livid by this point. Everything that could go wrong was going wrong but for some reason I just shrugged my shoulders and said “oh well.”

When my wave took off I was deeply embedded in the middle forced to either maintain the pack pace or expend energy fighting through in the beginning. I opted for the Pack pace which turned out to be much slower than I wanted we finished the first mile at 8:40. I decided that I felt good and wanted to keep feeling that way until after the first 5k so I stayed with this pace. After the 5k I was ready to get moving so I picked up the pace and moved my way gradually down.

My ITBand had been hurting pretty much from the beginning but it wasn’t horrible and I figured I would survive so I just kept plugging away. Then around mile 6 my opposite foot Achilles started to ache. Hmmm. This was something new. I worked my way through it though and I am just hoping it isn’t serious.

I finished the race in 1:22:47 according to my watch making my overall pace around 8:12 and my last 3 miles were sub 8 with the final being 7:20 which for me was great. I hope that in the future I can do this race much fast with all 10 miles sub 8 and hopefully closer to 7 min miles.

All in all it was a GREAT race and I can’t wait to do it again next year.
