Comment: Beautiful, Calm Day on Haines Point!

Race Report:

1:08:18

Well happy to say that I took 1:30 of last weekend's 10K time! Now if
I can just figure out how to run the first half slower and the last
half quicker, then I might be able to take off even more time! As Coach Debi said "Well we're whittling away at that time...."

This race is run entirely in East and West Potomac Park in DC. Those of you who have done the Marine Corp Marathon might know it as Haines Point OR you may refer to it as that miserable windy park just before Mile 20 and the 14th Street Bridge cutoff.

The morning was beautiful, cool crisp and no real wind coming off of the Potomac.
I picked up my bib number and t-shirt, dropped off said t-shirt at the bag check and went for an easy 10 minute warm up

Coach Debi had me trying to run based on percentages of my maximum effort with slow 1:30 jogs at every mile. It work well for me on the way out but on the way back, I lost focus a little.

Mile 1 - 10:57 (felt like 75%) I was calm and relaxed.

Mile 2 - 10:37 - (goal 80%) I felt good and faster. I kept
monitoring my body and asking, could I give more if I had to?
The answer was "yes"

Mile 3 - 10:45 - (goal 80%) I tried to "feel" the same as Mile 2,
Imagine my delight when I found myself passing quite a few people in this mile.
I liked that a lot! I took a gu at Mile 3 knowing there was water at Mile 4.

At mile 3 I lost some of my focus, from here on I should have been aiming for 90% of my maximum but I think I was running right around 80-85%.

Mile 4 - 11:13 - I struggled with drinking water and jogging slowly, so I
walked for 30 seconds to get it down.

Mile 5 - 11:21 - I didn't feel any slower but I was "pacing" off these
two girls in front of me because that seems to make the time pass and
quieted my mind. I guess I should have been focused more on "90%"

Mile 6 - 11:15 - This mile I just worked on passing the girl's I had
run with before and tried to focus on bringing myself in strong on the
last 2/10th, unlike last weekend.

To finish line - 2:06 - Happy with this 2/10th, I focused on leaning
forward and moving faster. I didn't want to be passed and managed to
pick up my pace and finish strong. I think this was the only time I may have genuinely come close to 90% effort.

Overall - 1:08:18

10 minute cool down back to the car at the opposite end of Potomac Park.

When all was said and done, it was a wonderful way to start a Sunday. Next weekend is the Kinetic Sprint Triathlon. I'm ready !!
