As far as the race itself goes, I was doing this race with two good friends. One of which is not in good shape at the moment and had goals of finishing and not having a heart attack. The other has been biking alot and had the goal of beating me. I of course have been training and had the goal of beating him. In general I love being racing triathlons against myself and nobody else. This race is the exception. I knew we would be close getting out of the swim, I knew he would dust me on the bike and I knew I would have to catch him on the run. All of this went down just as I expected. We came out of the water two seconds from each other, he got out of tranition faster and smoked me on the bike. The run is an out an back. I kicked it into high gear right from the start and soon realized I had to dial it back a bit. Then I realized I was going to slow and finally got into a good pace I thought I could hold. The turn-around was getting close and still no sign of my friend. Then, about 100 yards from the turn-around I spotted him. Flashes of Steve's victory at Reston going through my head. I started closing the gap. At the two mile point he looked back and saw I was about 20 yards back. He tried to kick it up a notch. I kept steady. He slowed down about 100 yards later. I passed him with about 1/2 mile to go and ran along side of him for a bit before I decided to test him. I pulled ahead and heard him breathing heavy trying to catch up. I knew I had him. I finished strong and beat him by 30 seconds! Last year he beat me by about 2 minutes.

The weather was perfect this year. Warm air temp, nice water temp, little wind. Last year it was cold, the water was freezing and it was sandstorm windy. What a difference the nice weather made. Jones Beach is beautiful. The cleanest beaches and the cleanest ocean water I have seen in the DE/MD/NJ/NY beaches.

A good way to end my second tri season!
