Race Report:

Colonies Zone SCY meet was at George Mason University, the best pool around. The facilities are top notch and the pool is very fast. Colonies Zone spans three days with the distance events on Friday Night, and the rest on Saturday and Sunday. The meet was very well run with one exception, there was not alot of publicity about Friday Night's "positive check in" 30 min BEFORE the meet started.

My events are listed below

1) 1000 Free (Friday Night) - I missed the positive check in at 5:30 so the heat sheets were already up when I arrived at 5:45. They offered me a swim starting at 9:15, which I declined. Scatch.

2) 500 free 6:50.98 (New PR - baseline)
37.30 1:17.64 (40.34)
1:58.93 (41.29) 2:40.18 (41.25)
3:21.49 (41.31) 4:03.18 (41.69)
4:44.55 (41.37) 5:27.14 (42.59)
6:10.34 (43.20) 6:50.98 (40.64)

I was very happy with my pacing until laps 8 and 9. I started the first three laps on 14 strokes and smoothly transitioned to 15 for lap 4. My stroke got even tighter on lap 8, so I ended up picking up an extra one, to 16. I was unprepared for that and ended up picking up even another and turning too close to the wall. I need to work on that transition from 15 strokes per length to 16 - or better yet, learn to hold 15s all the way to the end. Went totally anaerobic on the last lap to preserve another paced lap.

3) 100 Fly 1:19.07 (New PR, -1:53)

37.33 1:19.07 (41.74)

Not bad given that my focus was not on the fly this last few months. This is a PR by about a full second. This will be a focus for GM Sprints in the Fall.

4) 200 Free 2:30.27 (+1:28)
33.87 1:11.32 (37.45)
1:50.78 (39.46) 2:30.27 (39.49)

Man, I really blew it on the turns - This event was in the "shallow" end and had a floating bulkhead. Lost about 2/4 seconds because of turns. After flubbing the first turn (to far) I had trouble establishing a 15 stroke rhythm and was guessing at how many would take me into the wall - further complicating the race. I also flubbed the 5th turn. Anyway, with some practice on that floating bulkhead, I'm sure I can shave more time off of this event.

5) 100 IM (1:19:?? Unofficial)

First time I've done this as an event in over 25 years. I had seeded myself at 1:30, it was a pleasant surprise to see 1:19. I made one drastic mistake. After diving in, I heard lots of whistles and assumed it was a false start. I one-armed the next fly stroke, then realized the game was still on and cranked up again. I think the whistles were for the Women's race over in the deep end of the pool.

Will look to improve this at GMU Sprints in the Fall.

Next swim event will be Kinetic Sprint Tri - Hoping to bring it all together.
