Race Report:

This was supposed to be a relaxing end of year race for a good cause. Following the WG spring sprint where I was walking in the pool behind swimming roadblocks, I estimated a faster swim time. I looked forward to this race and on check in Brian says to me - awesome, you are #2 in the water. My knees buckled, that CAN'T be right, what about all those people surrounding the pool and all the fast swimmers? Turns out they were not registered. I was terrified, my good night sleep was gone.

Setup
Setup my T1 and found some familiar faces.

Swim (4:49)
I apologized to the swimmers behind me and told them I would look for them at the wall. I went out as hard as I could and my stroke, breathing and HR suffered. I waited at the far wall in lane 3 and the near lane in 4 and got passed both places. Came out of pool beat - too much leg, not enough arm.

T1
It was cold and I took the time to dry off, decided to wear full fingered gloves and a long sleeve jacket.

Bike (57:07)
Strong start - really enjoyed it. Coming up to the Herndon Fire Station, the trucks were out and the lights were on. I thought that was cool of them, then I realized they were doing their shift checks! I was passed by another rider about the 8 mile mark, but staying strong. I could not reset my bike computer - oh well, whatever. Ate a few gel blocks but began to feel it at the 28 overpass. Overall it was a great ride to be out front (even if it was my mistake!). I was either 5th or 6th rider in and that was cool. Bike dismount was fine, but shoes slid on pavement as I ran down to T2.

T2
Volunteers took my bike and handed me my transition bag - sooo cool, what service. I sat down to take my bike shoes off, but my left ratchet was jammed. So I just pulled the shoe off and then did the same with my right. As I did that, my right calf cramped BAD. I am still in my helmet trying to keep it together groaning. Now the 2 volunteers were guys from my work - they thought I was kidding. That was until one of their wives yelled at them - so there :-)! Got the cramp worked out and hit the road laughing still wearing my jacket and gloves and laughing like crazy.

Run (19:17)
I started out as fast as I could to try and regain some time. HR and breathing got out of whack - c'mon what am I thinking? Slowed down and got a pace. I think I was only passed by one runner. So it felt good, even though my place was not going to hold up for one second :-).
