Race Report:

I have been battling a leg issue and was fatigued all week on top of it, but I wanted to put everything into this race. With mixed emotions I greeted the news of the duathlon. I had plan to swim and bike as hard as I could and would let the leg do what it wanted to do. With the news of the run – bike – run I was concerned about a DNF. My wife asked what I was going to do and I said I at least had to start!

Transition setup was a snap! As usual I had lost something, this time it was the race number sticker on my helmet that I had mounted the night before. While the volunteers told me not to worry about it, I looked at my feet and there it was stuck to the bottom of my flip flop! Hmmm, signs of things to come? I popped a couple of ibuprofen and headed to the track.

R1 (21:16) (9:35)
I was in wave four and seeded myself to the back. My leg started hurting right away but I stuck to it. As soon as I got to the back of the stadium, shouts of “Runner Up” came down the line and we made room for the leaders – wow those guys book! Other than the leg that was bothering me, the run was uneventful, albeit slow.

T1
Easiest T1 ever! Although I did take the time to pop 2 more ibuprophen. Hopped on the bike and began tightening my shoes down.

Bike (1:14:31 (19.1MPH)
First – how much fun is the newly repaved South Lakes – niiiiicccccceeeeee. Got down into aero ASAP and tried to begin riding as hard as I could. I changed positions with a few other riders and called LEFT on the down hill on Twin Branches but riders did not make way, so I got skunked on the 1st free speed – oh well. Worked to keep a high cadence and keep on moving. It felt really good and on the 3rd loop I was able to get the full benefit of the hill – wow that’s fun ☺. Usually I am very good at hydration, but I actually had to remind myself to hydrate and came on the 3rd lap with a lot of fluid left. On the course I had 1 Gu and a couple of shot blocks. This was the lap I watched the suicide squirrel feint an attack at Dan Grove. Dismount was most unsmooth I have had. Coming up on dismount my left foot did not want to unclip for a moment. Dismounted and actually slid on my shoes for a couple of feet.

T2 (1:23)
Easy enough but took some time to drink a bunch of water.

Run (59:46) (9:38)
Slow start and leg continued bothering me. Started my shuffle and my right calf cramped up (whoops, lack of bike hydration came back to haunt me). I stretched that out stood up and Mike Sevier was coming up the hill in the same space I saw him at Run 1. Neil Medoff and I shared a few jokes and I setoff on the run. Bottom line – it hurt but I made it even though it felt like most of the field passed me on the run. I just had to tell myself to run my race and have fun which I did. Funny thing, I was only 7 seconds slower this year than 2007.

Conclusion
I enjoyed my second Reston Tri (and my 1st Reston Du). I need to work on my running over the winter and speed it up a little ☺.
