Race Report:

I opted for the early bird (non-competitive) start at 6:30 a.m. this year, so I could save some energy and have time to get cleaned up and go to a hammer throw competition (that didn't appear to have gone on anyway - aargh...). I've run this race four times now (every year it has been held), I've been a sponsor for the past three years, and I highly recommend it. It is an out and back from Belle Haven toward Mount Vernon. Lots of hills. I love hills, especially that good Fort Hunt hill. This was my first time opting for the non-competitive start and my worst time ever in a half marathon by quite a bit, but I really enjoyed the run any way and it is always wonderful to be out running along the river on a beautiful spring morning. It is well-organized race, small enough to be friendly, and if you are so inclined, you can go around twice and run the full marathon. Oh, and all registrants get tech shirts (the SportScience ones that feel cottony... ahhh) and all finishers get medals and the race has bottled iced tea at the finish, which is one of my favorite things to drink after a race. The on-course support is exceptional. The volunteers are psyched up and stay psyched up throughout, which is nice. If you take the normal 7:00 a.m. competitive start, as I have in years past, then you get an unusual World Laughter Day warm-up that really has you start off with a smile.
