Race Report:

This is my first race report and was motivated to do this given those who weathered the bone chilling cold at the Reston 10 Miler. I was wondering what the cones were as we picked up a friend to drive into DC. Funny thing is, I would have done Reston had I known. Then again, I'll take the flat short course in DC on any day like Sunday.

Report:
Goal was to determine pace for low end of Zone 4 heart rate and tune up for 1/2 marathon on Saturday which is a tune up for the season. Kept HR around 160-163 throughout with mile splits 6:50 to 7:30. 7:30 being the first mile trying to find a rhythm and a clear lane.

Race went smooth and pace felt good with some left in reserve, able to hold short conversations with other runners early on. This is one of the first times I recall running hard and not having a headache for the rest of the day. Either using the HR monitor or not being dehydrated from the night before really helped. Running into wind and cross winds were "noticeable" and actually felt like the cross wind were stealing my inhalations when running north/south.

This was the first race I have run separately in the 2 years since my wife starting running with me. It felt good to pick up the pace and test myself, and it just so happens that she runs faster without me around ;-)

The real joy was to turn around at the finish and catch her for the last mile. She looked really great and not even winded while she shaved off a few minutes from last year.

To end the morning and to make up for not going out the night before, we joined friends for a few pints of Guinness and brunch at our old pub in Arlington.

Slainte,
Reid
