My second sprint triathlon is now behind me.

While I continue to enjoy doing these, it is clear that I am still very much in the learning phase of my nascent triathlon career. I'm still making mistakes but my biggest problem continues to be not putting in enough training time.

What I learned:

Swimming in cold water takes some getting used to ... even with a wet suit on. I heard this from several other participants. It's as if the cold water puts your body in a mild state of shock. It wasn't until I was about 75m into the swim that I started to settle in to a normal stroke. But I was still way more winded at the end of the swim than I expected. My predicted time was 6:30. Though the clock read 6:34, I actually finished faster than expected (around 6:10 but it took me some time to exit the pool and cross the timing mats).

T1: I was dragging my butt a bit because I needed a moment to recover from the swim. It was a bit of a chore to get the wet suit off and its hard to get socks and arm warmers on with wet limbs. Note to self: bring a towel next time.

The bike leg went as well as I could have hoped. I passed many people on the course which always feels great but that will be all undone later during my run. It's time for me to replace my triple chain ring with a double. It's just excess weight and the shifting up to the big ring doesn't even work. That means I'm carrying two pieces of useless metal. I've read that making that change is the last thing I can do before it's time to upgrade the bike to something much more serious.

T2: Uneventful. I think I spend too much time on the details. Tying shoe laces, putting my gloves, glasses and arm warmers neatly in my helmet, stupid stuff. Or maybe it's just a clever way of stalling so I can catch my breath before the run.

My run had two acts. Act One sucked. I didn't have anything left ... well at least that's how it felt. I stopped a couple of times because my calves started tightening up on me. The last thing I wanted was a cramp but walking helped loosen things up. I was passed too many times on the run by people I was embarrassed to be passed by. It felt like I was recovering from some nasty surgery and jogging at that sickly pace was actually honorable. Well at least that would have been a decent excuse. Unfortunately, I couldn't use that one.

Once I got to the turn-around point, I ditched the Gatorade bottle I had been running with. (Oh yeah, another note to self: don't ever run with a Gatorade bottle in your hand. What the hell was I thinking??? hmm, maybe next time, I'll run with a 5 lb weight in one hand). The second half was much better that the first. Dunno if it was the fact that there was more downhill than up, or that I got rid of the bottle or that I had an increase in energy that comes from knowing I was almost done but I definitely had renewed energy on the way back. I also was now racing the clock since I really really wanted to finish in under 90 minutes. Nothing special about that number ... it's just a nice round milestone that I wanted to beat (not to mention that I finished my last tri in 92 minutes.

Post race: stuffing my face with pancakes and syrup was a slice of heaven, but that grande cup of Starbucks on the way home was nirvana.
