Race Report:

***GOALS***

SWIM: under 30
BIKE: around 3hrs

***RESULTS***

SWIM: 29:07 6th place female, 15th place overall
T1: 4:24 not sure what happened here…I could not figure out what to wear.
BIKE: 3:06:36 23rd place female
TOTAL: 3:40:06 3rd place female aquabike

***PRERACE***

I woke up around 4 and had a bagel with honey (yummy…my new favorite breakfast). Looked at the radar to see what was in store…looked like the mass that was coming our way had broken up and it would be more intermittent showers than torrential downpour…good. I then headed out. I got to the area early, set up T1 and drank a rain berry gatorade, and then hung out with Josh, Scott, Scott, and Danny until the start.

***SWIM***

I positioned myself at the front of my wave (3nd wave…all females and aquabike)…this is my only chance to get ahead so try to start out in front. The course was 2 loops (for the ½ distance) around a 5 buoyed strangely shaped course. And we are off….WAAAA….FREEEEZING water…..OH MY GOSH…..So for the first 10 minutes I was ready to pull off to the side and flag down a boat to come get me…..I HATE cold water…but I am NO quiter. So after passing the 3rd buoy I settled down and realized my feet had no feeling so I had to kick…which I am not used to. After the first loop around I felt pretty good and really tried to pick it up the 2nd time around.

***T1***

I ran to my bike to try and make a quick transition…huh. Had some trouble getting my wet suit off….then could not figure out what to put on first or at all. So it was a slow transition.

***BIKE***

So before the swim I thought the rain may be holding out…but once I got on my bike it all started to come down…UGG. The bike course was also 2 loops (for the ½ distance). The course was somewhat flat with lots of small rolling hills. Half way through the 1st loop I thought I would hydroplane off the side and that would be the end of me…but I managed ok. Only stopped once during the 1st loop, when I thought I had a flat. I felt pretty good the whole way and finished strong. I think I have finally figured out my nutrition: had 1 gel 30 min into the bike and drank 1 bottle of water, at the start of the second loop I switched from water to orange gatorade.

***POSTRACE***

A very anti-climatic finish for the aquabike…into T2 and that’s it. Oh well, I was happy to be done. Cleaned up my stuff and went over to see if others had finished. Seems like everyone had a really good race and was happy with their results. Congrats to all J

***LESSONS LEARNED***

I need to work on my transitions. I had too much energy left over…need to learn better pacing on the bike…need to push it more in the end….stop being a WUSS!
